Favorite Bible Passage:

Roman 15:5-7:

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

Testimony:

After high school, I was admitted to the United Stated Military Academy at West Point. As a cadet, I was a vocal opponent of mandatory chapel and declined opportunities to be involved in any Christian fellowship. However, near the end of my second year, I needed advice regarding my decision to stay in the military. I went to a trusted friend who introduced me to a Christian Army major who could give me some advice. We met in the West Point gym after a pickup basketball game. The officer suggested that I go to the source of all wisdom, God Himself, and encouraged me to accept Christ as my savior. Even though I knew almost nothing about God, the Bible, or the Christian life, God led me to commit my life to Christ at that point.

Soon thereafter, I left West Point and got involved in a campus fellowship at Indiana University, where I started to begin to grow in my relationship with Jesus Christ. I discovered the wonders of God’s grace--not just to become a Christian but also for me to live as a Christian. I saw many lives transformed while in college--a Jewish professor who became a Christian and had a powerful testimony for Christ, a divorced couple remarried after their relationship was healed by God, a female student who found complete forgiveness after an abortion, and many others. I found that God and His Word met my deepest needs for forgiveness, wisdom, discipline, joy, and direction.

Now 35 years later, it is clear to me that my decision to follow Christ was the best decision I ever made. God has led me to a wonderful Godly wife, given us four great sons, and helped me to make a contribution to my students, my profession, and the University of Minnesota.
