Matthew 5:3-10

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Testimony:

I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in Eagan, Minnesota. I received by B.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1979 and my Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1985. I taught for one year at Penn State University, from 1985 to 1986, and then I worked as a research economist in the World Bank from 1986 to 1999. I have been at the Department of Applied Economics of the University of Minnesota since 1999.

I was raised in a Baptist church (Riverview Baptist Church in West St. Paul), and I attended Baptist churches in Chicago and Palo Alto, California. In Washington I joined a Presbyterian church, and since coming to Minnesota I have joined a United Methodist church. I don’t think that God is particularly interested in the details of the theological traditions of these Protestant denominations. Rather I think He wants us to follow the teachings of Jesus and put God’s interests above our own in all aspects of our lives.
